Portnoy still strikes me as the "NP of today"...altho he might even be a little more broad within the scope of rock, AFA stylistically [even tho it all still falls under the genre of "rock playing"]...
However, good point, matricks. Indeed, it would seem that, primarily, the backlash against MP is more due to his ravenous younger fans & their "know-it-all" generalizations! [img]wink.gif[/img] [img]tongue.gif[/img] I think that is a fair assumption.
Last time I saw him, w Petrucci's trio [w Dave LaRue] in G3 [Vai w Virg / Sheehan; Satch w Hamm / Campitelli], he did a great job. The music, which was shred-metal/prog-fusion-rock, felt good, & he did fine for the genre. His time had improved 100% since that live DT album Change of Seasons [title?], if I may seem so presumptuous. I enjoyed his perf.

Campitelli, while not my fave Satch drummer [I prefer Gregg, Si, or Mover in the chair], did a great job AW - no frills accompaniment, but solid as a rock [np pun intended]. & HE had to FOLLOW da Virgmeister... ;c)

I used to be a big DT and Mike fan wh i first started drumming. I will give credit to them because they are the first artists to move me from mainstream music and without Mike i wouldn't have got into drumming like i have and therefore would have never checked out other cats...i do find now that hes playing lacks a lot feeling but i do give him and the band props for their odd time signature playing abilities and original song structures

He was to you what mainly Peart* was to me, another reason for the NP comparison besides much of his earlier playing approach itself.

I have quite a lot of time for MP, though like many here I accept him with his limitations. If you were to watch a video of him with the sound off, his technique would make you cringe. And he can be quite stiff ... and if you don't care for prog you're sh** outta luck. But he writes great drum parts that are (for the most part) perfect for DT and his other projects, and pulls them off live without charts, which takes quite some doing. He's quite self-deprecating on the video too ("here's another typical lick from the Mike Portnoy tool bag" or "this is just my usual development of the groove"), seems genuinely humble, is apparently an entertaining clinician, has a prodigious work ethic ... and has pulled himself back from the giddy edge with the A-word.

I believe Portnoy had a battle with alcohol a few years ago.
